Under the Sun in Maungmagan

I take a walk in Maungmagan beach, half an hour west of Dawei, in Thanintaryi Division, Myanmar. The intensity of the sun suddenly collapses and a magical hour ensues, with sweet, warm colours.

The fishermen are preparing their boats. They will leave at night and come back on midday.

Their children carry the fishing nets to the boats. It is hard work for the whole family.

As the sun goes down, the boats are finally ready to leave. They will depart around 1am and work in the sea for about twelve hours under a merciless sun.

After fishing, they clean their nets on the sand.

There is additional work to do, as the families walk the entire beach looking for shells.

It is as beautiful as paradise. A paradise of endless hard work, though.
